Waterproof vs Weatherproof

February 16, 2018

The question we get asked most about our speakers is "Are they waterproof?"  We are using a high quality Kicker speaker designed for car audio applications.  So we had to tell people no, they aren't waterproof.  But there is a solution - marine speakers.

Here's the thing about marine speakers.  They aren't really waterproof.  In so far as you should not submerge them under water and expect them to work.  Marine speakers are considered "water resistant" or "splash proof", which we would call "weatherproof" - you could get them wet splashing them at the beach, or have them out in the rain.  But they aren't meant to be submerged in or play under water.  Truly waterproof speakers do exist, but they're designed to play under water and don't sound too good out of water.  This is not ideal for a bluetooth speaker that's going to spend 99% of its time on dry land.

That being said, Kicker makes a really nice 4" marine speaker that meets or exceeds their car audio speakers in terms of sound quality.  Now you can take your Kulshan down to the river or set it by the pool and not worry about your fierce water polo matches affecting your tunes.

So for those of you wanting a weatherproof speaker, we are now pleased to offer the option of adding these weatherproof speakers to your build.  As an extra customizing bonus, you get your choice of a Gun Metal Grey or Olive Drab Green grille.  Just add Weather Proof Speakers from the Accessories page and choose your color from the options when ordering.
