East Bound and Down!

January 5, 2019

Happy New Year!!  Our New Year's Resolution is to upload a blog a week here at CSW.

So let's start the New Year off with a this Limited Edition 1 of 1 tribute speaker to one of the greatest car chase movies of all time - Smokey and the Bandit.

Back in the 70's, everybody wanted to drive a shiny black Trans Am with the Screaming Chicken graphic on the hood.  And that was due largely to the popularity of Smokey and the Bandit starring Burt Reynolds, Sally Fields, Jerry Reed and Jackie Gleason.  The film was the second highest grossing film of 1977, eclipsed only by a little Space/Western movie called Star Wars.

Big Enos bet Bandit he couldn't get 400 cases of Coors Beer from Texarkana to Georgia in time for his weekend party in 28 hours.  If he could pull off the feat, Big Enos would buy him a new truck worth $80,000.  The speaker captures these movie details with some great vinyl graphics.  The Screaming Chicken on the back wraps up onto the lid of the speaker, utilizing that distinct hood graphic from the car.

In order to keep the police from pulling over the truck carrying the beer, Bandit decided to run a decoy car to distract the police.  This car was none other than the Pontiac Trans Am.

When director Hal Needham saw a picture of a Pontiac Trans Am in a magazine, he had a product placement idea. He asked for six Trans Ams, but Pontiac would only agree to send four. Needham also asked for four Bonnevilles for Jackie Gleason's cars, but he only got two. By the time they shot the final scene, they had wiped out three Trans Ams and the fourth wouldn't start after all of the stunts, so another car was used to push it into the scene. For Smokey and the Bandit II (1980), Needham asked for and received 10 Trans Ams and 55 Bonnevilles with no trouble.

Along the way, Bandit picks up a runaway bride whos jilted fiance and Sheriff father-in-law were in hot pursuit.  Jackie Gleason's Sheriff Buford T. Justice is one of the most memorable characters in film history.  Gleason ad-libbed during the whole movie.  Reynolds wrote that Gleason "never said a single word written in the script." It was Gleason's idea to have the toilet paper coming out of his pant leg when Buford left the Bar B-Q.  Gleason would often ask his assistant Mal for a "hamburger," which was code for a glass of bourbon.

Jerry Reed, who played Cledus Snow in the movie, also provided the hit song "East Bound and Down" for the film. After promising he would come up with a song, he didn't have one at the end of filming. After Needham asked him about it, Reed promised he would have something for him the following morning. Despite being out all night, Reed managed to sing his new song "East Bound and Down" for Needham the next day. When Needham didn't react right away, Reed said, "If you don't like it I can change it. "If you change one damn note, I'll fuckin' kill you!" the director replied.

Next time you watch the movie, pay attention to the song's chorus when they’re driving to Texas.  Obviously they aren't East Bound, so the lyric is slightly different:

West bound and down, 18 wheels a rollin’

We're gonna do what they say can't be done.

We've got a long way to go and a short time to get there.

I'm west bound, just watch ol' "Bandit" run.

On the way from Texas to Georgia:

East bound and down, loaded up and truckin',

We're gonna do what they say can't be done.

We've got a long way to go and a short time to get there.

I'm east bound, just watch ol' "Bandit" run.

Keep your foot hard on the pedal.

Son, never mind them brakes.

Let it all hang out 'cause we got a run to make.

The boys are thirsty in Atlanta and there's beer in Texarcana.

And we'll bring it back no matter what it takes.

East bound and down, loaded up and truckin',

We're gonna do what they say can't be done.

We've got a long way to go and a short time to get there.

I'm east bound, just watch ol' "Bandit" run.

Ol' Smokey's got them ears on and he's hot on your trail.

He aint gonna rest 'til you're in jail.

So you got to dodge 'im and you got to duck 'im,

You got to keep that diesel truckin'.

Just put that hammer down and give it hell.

East bound and down, loaded up and truckin',

We're gonna do what they say can't be done.

We've got a long way to go and a short time to get there.

I'm east bound, just watch ol' "Bandit" run.

Although we aren't selling this Limited Edition Tribute Speaker, we thought it would be great to show you what we can make possible with our Custom Corporate model.  If you've got an idea, we'd love to make it come to life for you.
